Allied Telesis Deploys Smart Wireless LAN Services at Kanto Lodge, the United States Air Force Facility on Yokota Air Base
SAN JOSE, Calif., November 23, 2009: Allied Telesis Capital Corporation (ATCC), a global leader in the development of standards-based IP technology solutions and a wholly owned subsidiary of Allied Telesis Holdings, K.K., today announced it has deployed Smart Wireless LAN services within the Kanto Lodge on Yokota Air Base in Japan. In an effort to meet the wireless connectivity needs of the 374th Airlift Wing and the assorted tenant units at Kanto Lodge, Allied Telesis deployed new Smart Wireless LAN systems to provide reliable Wi-Fi coverage at the lodge facilities. Since this deployment, Kanto Lodge residents and guest can now gain access to myriad mobile applications.
Yokota's lodging operation, the Kanto Lodge, is one of PACAF's largest hotel operations. Each year more than 130,000 people are housed in the Kanto Lodge's six on-base facilities. With increasing demand for guests’ ability to connect wirelessly to laptops and other mobile devices, Kanto Lodge looked to install a robust WLAN solution to provide superior reliability and range. However, due to the facility’s unique layout, including multiple buildings of varying sizes and room densities, as well as the lodge’s distinct construction of thick reinforced concrete walls, providing consistent Wi-Fi coverage throughout the lodge and to all guest rooms was an obstacle. In such an environment, consumer-grade routers and many enterprise WLAN solutions struggle with signal penetration and reach, resulting in patchy and dropped connections. To overcome this challenge, the lodge demanded an extremely robust system – yet still wanted to maintain low operational costs to meet the initial capital budget constraints.
“As hospitality environments tend to have a large number of devices connecting and moving around, particularly new mobile devices including Netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices, the system’s ability to automatically adapt to changes makes it perfectly suited for installations like Kanto,” said Bruse Green, general manager, operations for Allied Telesis at Yokota Air Base.
ATCC engineered the wireless network design to ensure a positive customer experience. By understanding the facility’s layout, the ATCC team was able to install the WLAN solution in a way to extend the service of a wired network infrastructure to wireless users, delivering a more diverse set of applications to increase guest satisfaction and productivity.
“I am extremely pleased with the solution engineered and installed at the Kanto Air Base, as it is without a doubt the very best wireless Internet service of any lodging facility in the Asia Pacific theatre,” said Keith Southard, president, Allied Telesis Capital Corp. “We were impressed by the Base’s leadership and commitment to deliver a very-high level of service to its guests. This build-out sets the performance bar for wireless Internet access in air force lodging facilities.”
As Yokota is the main aerial port of Western Pacific, it consistently operates at 96 to 100 percent occupancy. Recognized as the most permanent change in station (PCS), personnel and their families use Kanto Lodge as temporary lodging facilities. The Kanto Lodge accommodates more than 100 Air Mobility Command aircrews and 100 distinguished visitors each month.
